In my opinion, cocktail is probably the trickiest evening dress code for women.🫣

The challenge is that cocktail allows much more freedom than most people realize. Different dress lengths, different shoes, different colors, different levels of formality - so many things can be correct.

A cocktail invitation for a garden party at someone’s house on a summer afternoon and a cocktail invitation for a seated dinner followed by an opera performance may use exactly the same wording. Yet the appropriate fabrics, silhouettes, accessories, and overall level of formality will be completely different. 🫣

This is why I always tell my clients that with cocktail attire, the location and timing of the event matter just as much as the dress code itself.
