You have to be ready for the waves to crash into both the model and the photographer. But the shots you can get are worth it!

kirillumrikhin Bowhead whales,
Sea of Okhotsk, Shantar Islands

This is the place where I first saw whales so close and even tried photographing them underwater. A rare Sea of Okhotsk population lives here, only a few hundred individuals remain.

These giants can live up to 200 years. Recent research shows their cells are exceptionally efficient at repairing DNA and suppressing mutations, which may explain their remarkable resistance to cancer and extreme longevity.

I rediscovered these shots while preparing for my upcoming whale lecture on March 4th at the Manhattan Beach Library.

Место, где я впервые увидел китов на расстоянии вытянутой руки и даже попробовал снимать их под водой. Здесь живёт редкая охотская популяция — всего несколько сотен особей.

Эти гиганты могут жить до 200 лет. Недавние исследования показали, что их клетки умеют особенно эффективно восстанавливать ДНК и подавлять мутации — поэтому у них практически не встречается рак.

In two weeks, I’ll be giving a lecture at the Manhattan Beach Public Library. I’ll talk about the life of whales, showing photographs, and sharing stories from my travels.
Whales are the largest animals on our planet and they are simply incredible. I’ve been lucky enough to visit places where they live, swimming with them, photographing them, speaking with scientists, and studying them for the past 10 years. Mauritius, the Azores, Kamchatka, Antarctica. Now I’d love to share this knowledge with you.
This talk is very important to me. It will be my first public talk in the United States. The event will take place with the support of the @roundhouseaquarium Roundhouse Aquarium of Manhattan Beach Pier and OCEANOGRAPHIC TEACHING STATIONS, INC — one of the oldest nonprofit organizations in Manhattan Beach, with over 40 years of history.

It’s a great honor for me to host this event at the city library, and I would love to see all my friends there. Please register to save your spot. I’d be very happy to see you there.
