The multi-layered gradient lacquering of Konstantin Chaykin’s “Kolobok” dial is an exceptionally labor-intensive operation. Up to ten ultra-thin layers are applied sequentially onto the dial, creating a lifelike depth for the character with a gradual transition from a sunny center to a rosy edge.

k_chaykin The Kolobok 2 watch in a 40-millimeter stainless steel case, a modified version of the popular Kolobok model, became the second regular piece in Konstantin Chaykin’s Wristmons collection, following the Joker Classic. In the video, you can observe the assembly process of this watch, inspired by the character from a famous Russian fairy tale. All components of the watch mechanism are designed and manufactured at Konstantin Chaykin’s own manufactory. To ensure flawless operation, every component must be crafted with exceptional precision.
In the design of Kolobok 2, beyond referencing the fairy tale character, the watchmaker also incorporated another hidden meaning. According to the master, this watch represents the first Russian smiley face. The round-faced character with large blue eyes, featuring the signature Joker indication for hours and minutes, smiles cheerfully. Its smile functions as a moon phase indicator. The dial’s multilayered lacquer coating with a gradient effect gives the anthropomorphic face of Kolobok 2 its distinctive resemblance to a golden-brown crust.

k_chaykin Many enthusiasts are drawn to Konstantin Chaykin’s inaugural timepiece, the Cinema model, whose very design elicits an instant emotional response. The watch contains a singular complication devised especially for it: a miniature mechanical movie projector. The accompanying video unveils several of the watch’s secrets. In an aperture beneath the dial, shielded by a convex lens, it replays the historic series of photographs of the galloping horse “Sallie Gardner at a Gallop,” taken a century and a half ago by British motionpicture pioneer Eadweard Muybridge. To keep every frame sharp during projection, Chaykin equipped the tiny projector with a special shutter. A plastic model of the movement in the video demonstrates its operation: the shutter appears to separate the successive frames of the horse’s movement printed on a rotating disc. To enlarge this disc—and thereby the images—the watchmaker added semicircular protrusions to the rectangular whitegold case.

Чтобы увеличить этот диск и, соответственно, изображения, мастер предусмотрел полукруглые выступы на прямоугольном корпусе часов из белого золота.

k_chaykin In this video you can see the design and operating principle of the “Lunokhod Prime” movement — the watch from Konstantin Chaykin’s “Space Program,” launched in 2011. The master set himself an ambitious goal: to portray the Moon inside a watch in the most spectacular yet realistic way possible. Instead of the classic flat moon-phase display, he introduced a 3D spherical indicator (a concept once considered by the renowned Russian inventor Ivan Kulibin for his pocket “planetary watch”).
The 3D moon-phase indicator, with its 12 mm-diameter sphere, was at the time of Lunokhod’s creation the largest of its kind ever installed in a wristwatch anywhere in the global watch industry. Such dimensions called for a special movement architecture: as shown in the video, the calibreis built as a ring that surrounds the spherical indicator. The “Moon” itself, crafted from bulat steel, remains fixed; only a hemisphere of blackened silver moves. Over the course of a lunar month this silver half-sphere circles the bulatsphere, revealing the current phase of Earth’s nocturnal luminary.

Housed in a 40 mm steel case and equipped with the signature Joker indication module, the watch elicits an immediate emotional response thanks to the constantly changing expression of its “eyes” (hour and minute indicators) and its “smile” (day of the week display).
Look at the dial as if through a watchmaker’s loupe and appreciate the classical decorative techniques the master selected, inspired by the minimalist “Puritan” pocket watches of the eighteenth century. The rhodium plated mainplate and bridges of the Joker module are finished in a frosted style and in graining achieved by abrasive blasting. You can also admire the impeccably crisp lettering of the weekday indications, the refined polish of the ruby bearings, and, of course, the hallmark of every Joker, the engraving of playing card suit symbols on the bezel.

k_chaykin This video introduces you to Konstantin Chaykin’s watch, the “Levitas Jazz,” in which the master watchmaker has embodied his lifelong love for one of the most influential musical movements of the 20th century. These mysterious watches feature a transparent dial where both the hour and minute hands are controlled by a single sapphire disk. The watch mechanism is enclosed within a sculpted case crafted from white, yellow, and rose gold. The decoration of the case imitates a stylized piano keyboard, while the opaque section of the dial mimics a vinyl record with characteristic concentric grooves.
At the “3 o’clock” position on this “record,” there’s a golden gramophone stylus, serving as a moon phase indicator, where the stars are replaced by musical notes. Other musical notes and clefs—treble and bass—are creatively transformed into hour markers along the scale framing the transparent part of the dial. This scale itself has been humorously styled by the watchmaker to resemble a vinyl record label, featuring the English inscription “Selected Works of Konstantin Chaykin.”
