shishkinmax “The Last Ronin” - The Triple Duel Ten years ago I came up with the idea of staging a fight in the spirit of a Mexican standoff - but with a twist: a single knife as the only weapon, passed from flesh to flesh. I didn’t know how to use it back then, so the idea waited for its moment. It eventually became the basis for the villains of THE LAST RONIN. A triple duel fought with one knife is, of course, a very theatrical setup - and the way to justify it came from King’s obsession with theatricality itself. This led to a three-way conflict where each fighter has their own motive and their own grievance with the others - and it let us highlight three distinct fighting styles: - Ronin, without his sword or gun, is slightly clumsy but still sharp and reactive - Chief fights rougher, wilder, he doesn’t fear getting stabbed, and his strikes are brutal and less technical - King, despite first impressions and his build, is agile, precise, and loves to show off Some might think it’s lazy directing to hide actors’ faces behind masks so stunt doubles can step in - but God knows I’m genuinely obsessed with masks and protective helmets. There’s nothing cooler to me than a character masking up before a fight. It’s a symbolic rejection of their “human” side and a shift into a more primal combat mode - and it always reminds me of knight duels. When all three put on their helmet-masks, it announces a ritual duel with rules and honor. The biggest challenge during production was timing. We had only five hours to shoot the entire duel, still had dialogue scenes to cover, and by the end of the day we needed to film a complex pyrotechnic stunt involving multiple body hits on King. Even so, I’m incredibly proud of our stunt team - they ran through take after take of a really demanding choreography, at full speed, without holding anything back. shishkinmax “The Last Ronin” - Corridor Fight. I once decided I’d invented a new subgenre “bullet-punk”: a post-apocalyptic world where ammo is the main currency. It came from my wish to create a unique kata for the hero - katana in one hand, pistol in the other. I’ve always admired @kultkinohaus for inventing gun-kata at home and turning it into an art form in «Equilibrium». And I’ve been obsessed for years with the «Oldboy» hallway fight - to me, the pure essence of cinematic action. I’ve long wanted to pay tribute to it - «The Last Ronin» grew from that need. Years ago I saw this scene in my head: a lone warrior in a helmet fighting through a narrow corridor against a small army. He’s got a sword and a gun - they’re just obstacles to his goal. Then came the question: why does he shoot and they don’t? Maybe bullets are rare, priceless - and that’s what shapes this world. Feels more like anime or a game, but why not let myself dream? @gdtreal once said he’s been making the same movie all his life, refining the same ideas each time. This is my third attempt at a corridor fight, the second top-shot try (still dreaming of a «Hotline Miami» film). Am I satisfied? Not yet: the “helmet” theme remains to be explored. But the team’s work made me proud and endlessly grateful. Huge thanks to our stunt crew for making an action scene I never thought possible in a Russian film. To VFX team for the slickest muzzle flashes in the universe. To the composer for the most energizing score. To producers for trust and support. To @wellgousa for the U.S. premiere And to the whole crew for love and talent.
